Different ASTM Grades | What Do They Mean

2. ASTM A335

ASTM A335, are also suitable for high-temperature applications. Two grades under this are included: ASTM A335 p11 and A335 p91. ASTM A335 p11 is a Chromium-molybdenum welding alloy steel with high nickel content that is well suited for creep resistance and high-temperature strength. A335 p91 is, instead, an alloyed 9Cr-1Mo steel with creep strength and oxidation resistance that are even better. They have found their application in power generating plants, chemical plants as well as other operations that involve high temperature.

3. ASTM A387

ASTM A387 is the specification for alloy steel plate for pressure vessels including their making. The grades produced from this alloy are two types: ASTM A387 grade 22 and ASTM A387 grade 11. Grade 11 is basically a Chromium-Molybdenum alloy steel plate which is mainly intended for the elevated temperatures service. Grade 22, the other name for 2.25Cr-1Mo steel, is also greater in terms of increased high-temperature strength and stress.


In relation to the carbon steel plates that could be used in making the pressure vessels of different kinds as stated by ASTM A516, they are covered. The standard specifies requirements for the heat treatment, chemical composition, mechanical properties, physical properties, and dimensional tolerances of the carbon steel plate. The most common standardized grades are ASTM A516 grade 60 which refers to normal grade steel and ASTM A516 grade 70 which is high-grade steel. Here, grade designations vary in that the minimum yield physical properties and tensile strengths also differ. ASTM A516 plates are sometimes referred to as “good-weldable”, “formable” and “moderately-strong”. They are very often the materials of choice in the construction of storage tanks, pressure vessels, and some structural components.
